The band Magnum should be no strangers to any self-respecting rock fan. Formed
in the 70s and still going strong, they have seen quite a few quality musicians
come and go and produced some outstanding music.
Kingdom of Madness is made up of Magnum alumni, pooling together their incredible
musical talent to play those classic Magnum songs again, with their own style.
Heading the band is keyboard player extraordinaire, Mark Stanway who is joined by
Micky BARKER drums
Richard BAILEY keyboards, flute
Mo BIRCH vocals, percussion
Mark PASCALL vocals
Brian BADHAMS bass, vocals
Alan BELL guitar
The band work so well as a unit that for all intense and purposes, this IS Magnum, just another
variant if you will. They are just as capable (if not more!) and of course these guys (and girl) have the
Magnum so fully "get" each song and now how to perform it to its best.
The Newhampton Arts Centre in Wolverhampton paid host to Kingdom of Madness tonight (the only show in 2021) to a loyal, excitable crowd who welcomed the band onstage with the kind of roar you get in Wolverhampton!
The set was split in two but any concerns of a loss of momentum were quickly dismissed. The band held the audience's attention throughout. They were rockin' this joint with a heady mix of prog and rock.
All the classics were played from the best eras of Magnum from Kingdom of Madness itself through to Rockin' Chair with the likes of On A Storyteller's Night, Midnight (a personal fave) and Changes in between. Each song was performed impeccably and with an enthusiasm not often seen in Magnum itself. These people are enjoying playing their classic songs and attacking them with renewed musical ideas and style. The slower songs were warm and flowing; the harder songs were fast, punchy and tight. The vocals were shared by newcomer Mark Pascall (who was awesome!) and Mo Birch. They have their own vocal range and style which works well and together they have a depth and range that Bob
Catley would struggle with to be frank.
Playing only his second gig with the band, Alan Bell played a blinding show on guitar. He attacked each song with a force and musicianship that puts any Magnum guitarist to shame. He was having a ball tonight and was on fire, especially on "Kingdom of Madness" itself. He nailed it! It was so refreshing to hear these songs played with a higher level of musicality and technique. Bell rings like a bell!
Of course, we have to talk about Mark Stanway. This guy is a maestro on keyboards and piano. He was a technique and musical ability that Magnum are nowadays sorely missing. He is every bit as good, if not better, than he has ever been. Note-perfect and creative throughout, Mark is a pleasure to watch AND hear. His sound and keyboard parts are so integral to these songs and his didn't miss a trick.
The rhythm section was also incredible. Drummer Micky Barker (who treated us to an awesome drum solo) and bassist Brian Badhams were tight and focused throughout. Never dull and always driving, these guys gave a tighter, heavier "thump" to the classic Magnum songs we know and love.
It was also lovely to see Richard Bailey in the band playing flute, keyboards and a little guitar. He is so talented and a true musician. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable trip down Magnum memory land, courtesy of Kingdom of Madness. Do yourself a big favour and see these live. You will NOT regret it. They're playing some more shows in 2022 so go see them!

Critically acclaimed blues rock guitarist Eric Gales will tour the UK in March and April 2022. Tickets for all dates are available from www.thegigcartel.com. The tour follows the January 28th release of Gales’ forthcoming studio album “Crown” produced by and featuring Joe Bonamassa. The album will be released by Provogue.
Special guest on all shows is celebrated British Blues rock guitarist Danny Bryant. Hailed as a national blues treasure,” Bryant recently released his 12th studio album The Rage To Survive via Jazzhaus Records.
Eric Gales takes his rightful place at the head of the blues-rock table as he announces Crown, his career-defining new album. The hotly tipped new studio album finds Eric opening up like never before, sharing his struggles with substance abuse, his hopes about a new era of sobriety and unbridled creativity, and his personal reflections on racism. Five years sober, creatively rejuvenated, and sagely insightful, the songs on Crown are delivered with clarity and feature Eric's personal experiences and hope for positive change. This is Eric at his most boldly vulnerable, uncompromisingly political, and unflinchingly confident. The first single off the album, the slinky I Want My Crown, opens with a fanfare of elegant lead guitar virtuosity before slipping into a funky groove. Here, with playful bravado, Eric sings about finally getting his due while also admitting his self-sabotaging past. Clean and focused with guitar in hand, he eyes the crown and goes for it, battling powerhouse blues warrior Joe Bonamassa in a Rocky-like epic fight. Triumphant horns spur on the excitement as the pair unleash barrages of jaw-dropping blues-shred with each player’s passages feeling like the final fury of a July 4th fireworks explosion.
Eric Gales is a blues firebrand. Over 30 years and 18 albums, his passion for the music and his boundless desire to keep it vital has never waned, even when his own light dimmed due to his substance struggles. Since 1991, the Memphis-born guitarist has blazed a path reinvigorating the blues with a virtuosity and rock swagger that have him being heralded as the second coming of Jimi Hendrix. He was a child prodigy with bottomless talent and fierce determination, and at just 16 years-old released his debut, ‘The Eric Gales Band,’ on Elektra Records.
He’s earned high praise by guitarists’ guitarist and household name axe men such as Joe Bonamassa, Carlos Santana, Dave Navarro, and Mark Tremonti. In addition, he has held his own with some of the greatest guitarists in the world, including Carlos Santana at Woodstock 1994, Zakk Wylde, Eric Johnson, and a posse of others as a featured guest touring with the Experience Hendrix Tour.
Gales’ 2019 album The Bookends was written over a nine-month period, the album was recorded at Recorded at Studio Delux, Van Nuys, California, The Doghouse, Woodland Hills, California, Blakeslee Recording, North Hollywood. Three-time Grammy-nominated and Emmy Award winning vocalist B. Slade appears on two songs, Something’s Gotta Give and bonus track Pedal to the Metal.
His 2017 album, Middle of the Road, reached #1 on the iTunes Blues chart and #4 on the Billboard Blues chart. It made Classic Rock Magazine and Total Guitar albums of the year with the latter saying it was “the album that should define his career.” Classic Rock said, “the notes drip from Gales’ fretboard like warm honey”, The Guitar Magazine exclaimed it’s the “the injection of danger and unpredictability that the blues-rock scene desperately needs”, Blues Matters professed “truly the man is blessed”, whilst Powerplay said “the more you listen to it the more the brilliance of Eric Gales becomes apparent.”
Gales’ story is an incredible one, he was a child prodigy and released his debut album The Eric Gales Band in 1991 as a 16-year-old on Elektra Records. It was the first of 10 albums on a major label through a blistering career. He has released 16 studio albums in total ahead of Crown and a host of other collaborations. He has battled drink and drug issues and spent time in jail in 2009 for possession of drugs and a weapon. Gales proudly tells his story every night before every show, now over two years sober he is creating some of the most breath-taking music he has ever made. Talking about his approach to song writing in this time he reflects. “I guess the songs would answer the question more or less, I definitely don’t have anything clouding my view and it’s definitely a much purer place where its coming from.”

Musicians with as many talents as Tara Lynch (nickname: “Gui-Tara”) are a rare find.
The American multi-instrumentalist sings, plays the electric and the acoustic
guitar, as well as the bass, drums and piano, in addition to composing her own
material from an early age. At the same time, she enjoys an excellent
reputation among her colleagues and not only deployed her own skills on her
current album Evil
Enough but was supported by international stars such
as Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath/Dio), Tony MacAlpine, Phil Soussan (Ozzy Osbourne/Billy Idol), Mark Boals (Dokken/Yngwie Malmsteen, Ted Nugent), Brent Woods (Vince Neil/Sebastian Bach), Glen Sobel (Alice Cooper) and Björn Englen (Quiet Riot/Yngwie Malmsteen) as
guest musicians. “They all welcomed the opportunity to play the songs I wrote
and each guest put their own special vibe and feeling into each track, making
them sound just perfect!”
And indeed Tara Lynch has succeeded in recording
an outstanding rock album in Evil
Enough, which – despite the renowned guest contributions –
focuses mainly on her expressive voice, her intelligent, elegant guitar style
and her mature songwriting. Says Tara:
“I prefer to think of the guitar as a form of art and not just a tool to create
music with, which is why there are four instrumental tracks on Evil Enough. My musical taste
varies widely, and though I’m a huge fan of the instrumental guitar genre, my
favourite bands have a vocalist and a guitarist that really takes advantage of
melodies and not just pure shred.”
For this reason Lynch,
who has studied with Steve
Vai (Frank
Zappa, Alcatrazz, David Lee Roth), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater, Black Country Communion, Joe Bonamassa),
among others, relies primarily on inspiration and instinct, despite her
accomplished technical skill: “What you hear is exactly what comes out of me
without any pre-programmed ideas. I have lived quite a colourful life thus far
and have lots of things to talk about, so when I write my music I just say it
like it is. I do the same with my guitar playing. I’m not out there to impress
anybody, just to tell my story and hope that people enjoy what they hear and
can even relate.” And that’s exactly what she’s achieved in all ten songs
on Evil Enough.
Care for some examples? ‘Antidote’ is
the first single and official music video released from the album. Tara: “This track tells the
story of an all too familiar situation for a lot of people where the one
closest to them hurts them so much that they resort to welcoming the company of
others as an antidote.”
In March/April 2019, Tara embarked
on her EVIL ENOUGH TOUR in the UK & Ireland
as special guest of UFO where
the crowds filled each and every venue to capacity to see Tara open each night,
which is very unusual for an opener! The tour was a great success.
In October 2019, TARA continued
her EVIL ENOUGH TOUR joining
the ranks of artists Lamb Of
God, Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies, Queensryche and many
more, rockin’ the high seas on the MEGADETH MEGACRUISE where she put on her
touring show and also participated in a Q&A and artist/cruiser jam
session.
The epic full length is nine tracks of neo-classical power metal that are melodic,
technical, and progressive. Led by main composer and guitarist Andy Sartori, with
vocalist Scott Board, drummer Dino Castano and bassist Rod Viquez, the band sets
the mood for something more than just singing over music.
With grandiose instrumentals and heroic vocals, Sartori creates complex, melodic
tunes that command attention. They are heavily influenced by classical baroque music,
so the band stands as the symphony behind Andy Sartori as the ‘maestro’. What sets
these guys apart from other bands is their music composition. Andy Sartori explains
further:
“We use a lot of arrangements that you won’t find any other bands doing. Lots of
vocals, lots of guitar quartets, duets, and harmony arrangements. My writing is based
on positive vibes, positive lyric content, no criticism, no anger, and I write sometimes
about spiritual content in the matter of being a better human and about life
experiences, personal and in general along with influence from movies and stories I
enjoy... sometimes."
Today, in preview to the album's release, Sartori is sharing the title track and first
single "Dragon's Fire" at the following links:
