Iconic vinyl: Survivor 2-fer!

 This week's iconic vinyl is a two-fer.

We're looking at Survivor and the two songs from the Rocky movie series.

Sylvester Stallone was instrumental in getting the Survivor song "Eye of the Tiger" on the soundtrack for Rocky 3.

This hit movie and single catapulted Survivor to stardom with a hit single and debut album also called Eye of the Tiger.

Released on Scotti Bros Records in 1982 we see here the original vinyl release as well images from the single and movie

The song not only appeared in 3 but in the amazing sequel Rocky 4 and this was joined by another Survivor hit "Burning Heart" which we see here as the original 7" jukebox single released in 1985. Again Sly got the song in the movie.

MVT Press release about RADAR festival

RADAR BECOMES FIRST FESTIVAL TO DONATE PERCENTAGE OF TICKET SALES TO MUSIC VENUE TRUST

TICKET SALE CONTRIBUTION WILL GO TO THE CHARITY’S PIPELINE INVESTMENT FUND TO SUPPORT GRASSROOTS MUSIC VENUES

London February 20, 2024. Music Venue Trust (MVT), which represents hundreds of UK Grassroots Music Venues (GMVs), has announced a new agreement with RADAR Festival. A percentage of every ticket sold for the independent festival will go towards supporting grassroots music venues via the charity’s Pipeline Investment Fund.

RADAR, an inclusive, modern, contemporary indoor music festival, becomes the first festival to agree to donate to the Pipeline Investment Fund which has awarded more than £260,000 to 61 UK Grassroots Music Venues since it was founded in 2022. The announcement follows renewed calls from MVT for a ticket levy on all major stadium and arena gigs to support GMVs in the wake of the news that 16% (125) of UK Grassroots Music Venues were lost in the last 12 months with 38% of all UK GMVs posting a financial loss.

https://www.radarfestival.co.uk/

Founded in 2019 this year’s RADAR festival runs from July 26 to 28 at O2 Victoria Warehouse in Manchester with a lineup that includes The Midnight, Dirty Loops, Plini, VOLA and Sungazer. Co-organiser Catherine Jackson-Smith, who also owns The Lounge Bar in Alton, said “I’ve seen the journey in my own venue of young artists playing for the first time and stepping onto a small stage that they know has previously hosted artists that they admire and want to emulate.  Time and again I’ve watched these nervous artists blossom in confidence, ability and stature within the scene, waiting to be discovered by the masses.  When that happens, they know how to interact with a crowd, how to control a room, pace their set and perform to the best of their abilities.

These are all crafts that you can only develop with a small, raw audience that the grassroots music scene cultivates every night up and down the country. If we don’t protect the smaller venues then there isn’t a pipeline for the next headliners, and this ticking time bomb is something that the music industry can, and must, take action on.”

Kaan Tasan, singer of Heart of a Coward who has performed at The Lounge Bar, The Boileroom, RADAR 2019 and 2023 and will play at this year’s festival, said “Without the wide variety of grassroots music venues across the country, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to grow, develop and cut my teeth as a musician from grassroots up to international touring. I owe a lot to the local venues I've played and the teams that work so hard to keep their doors open. With the number of venue closures, future generations are getting fewer opportunities to express themselves in creative spaces and that will have a massive knock-on effect to the UK creative industries in the future”

Joe James, RADAR co-organiser and former events manager at The Boileroom in Guildford added “Many of the crew working at RADAR - lighting and sound engineers, stage and production managers, merchandise sellers and more - gained first-hand experience at grassroots venues. As well as nurturing artists these training grounds support the whole talent ecosystem.”

“We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to RADAR Festival, for taking this bold step as the first festival to champion the Pipeline Investment Fund. Their support is a strong commitment to the heart and soul of the UK's music scene, nurturing its roots through the vital network of Grassroots Music Venues.” said MVT CEO and founder Mark Davyd.

The Pipeline Investment Fund awards grants to support two key areas of work:

 ●      Small scale capital projects; including lights, sound, access, ventilation and minor building alterations

●      Staff Training; workforce diversification, succession planning, skills development and strengthening local community ties

Read more about PIF here: www.musicvenuetrust.com/pipeline-investment-fund The fund prioritises support for organisations who may have been excluded from other available funding and is open to all venue operators and organisations that meet any of the three definitions of a Grassroots Music Space, which can be found here.

About Music Venue Trust

Music Venue Trust is a UK registered charity which acts to protect, secure, and improve the UK's Grassroots Music Venues.

Created in January 2014, Music Venue Trust aims to secure the long-term future of GMVs in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, whether they are iconic venues such as Hull Adelphi, Exeter Cavern, The 100 Club, Band on the Wall, King Tut’s, and Clwb Ifor Bach, or lesser-known venues that are equally important to their geographical or musical community. These venues play a crucial role in the development of British music, nurturing local talent, providing a platform for artists to build their careers and develop their music and their performance skills.

MVT works to gain recognition of the essential role these venues fulfil, not only for artist development but also for the cultural and music industries, the economy, and local communities. The geographical spread of GMVs provides access to live music, for both performers and audience members, in many locations that do not have alternative cultural venues. The charity provides advice to the government, the cultural sector, and the music industry on issues impacting GMVs and is the nominated representative that speaks on behalf of the Music Venues Alliance, an association of venues from across the UK.

INCOMING! Pestilence

Genre-defying Dutch death metal legends PESTILENCE have singled-out and re-recorded twelve emblematic anthems from across their 38-year career into "Levels of Perception"; the album is set for release on April 26th via Agonia Records. The release will be preceded by a three-week long headlining tour of Europe, which kicks off on April 3rd.

Patrick Mameli - whose signature vocal, guitar and songwriting skills constitute the hallmark of PESTILENCE - finds "Levels of Perception" to be a testament to the band's role in death metal's progression. "I've always wanted to do a best-of album, because it would mean that I've achieved something in the past; something that still has its value today," Mameli reflects. "To be able to choose from songs that I composed in the distant past, transporting them into the now, with the line-up of the recordings that consisted of Michiel van der Plicht (drums), Rutger van Noordenburg (guitar) and Joost van der Graaf (bass) - I found this to be of great value and sheer awesomeness."

Re-recording of the tracks has not only managed to breathe new life into them - half thanks to new line-up, and other half by implementing subtle changes which reflect Mameli's matured vision and refined with years of experience aesthetic - but also sets them apart from cheap, unimaginative compilations, by unifying the album's sound as befits a full-length release. "The album's title is Levels of Perception. Why? Because this is what has happened with the songs," Mameli explains. "Performed by different musicians, with their own views, musical abilities and interpretations, shining a new light on them. So here we are with new Levels of Perception."

The drums for "Levels of Perception" were recorded by Michiel van der Plicht in 2021, during a live stream held in T Paard (The Hague, NL). "These recorded drum tracks were so awesome that we just had to use them, fine-tuning the guitars and bass," Mameli comments. These and other re-recordings were done with Reaper behind the console at van der Plicht's own studio On Duty in Mijdrecht, NL. The latter engineered, mixed and mastered the album. "I've started to realize, after recording Exitivm, that when you can engineer, mix and master by yourself, the control over your own product is way bigger, through the honesty and passion for your own compositions; rather than hiring an engineer that has no feel for your music," PESTILENCE's frontman wraps up.

The cover artwork was created by Peter Suchy.

PESTILENCE was established in the Netherlands in 1986 and is considered to be a progressive death metal phenom, labeled on the same genre-defying scale as Death, Cynic and Atheist. The group is led by founder, guitarist and mastermind Patrick Mameli, who's been the band's binding factor through two breakups and reunions. Both a reinvention and a confirmation of everything the band has been standing for since 1986, PESTILENCE is more than ever breaking new grounds and exploring the further outposts of extreme metal on "Exitivm" (2021) - the last album, which landed on several Billboard charts; most notably including the top 200 best selling albums. In 2023, the band remastered & reissued its classic catalog, and announced "Portals" to be the title of its next studio album, which is currently in the works. PESTILENCE shows no signs of slowing down, starting 2024 off with a spring tour and a long-sought best-of album, "Levels of Perception" - both of which will roll out this April.

Incoming! Joe Bonamassa live album

Joe Bonamassa Unveils "Live At The Hollywood Bowl With Orchestra" – A Spectacular Live Album and Film Commemorating His Historic Debut At the Iconic Venue

In an unparalleled blend of blues, rock, and orchestral majesty, Joe Bonamassa is set to release Live At The Hollywood Bowl on May 17th via J&R Adventures. This monumental CD/DVD, also available in CD/BR, 2 LP Vinyl (180-gram), and digital formats, immortalizes Joe's first-ever performance at the iconic Hollywood Bowl in August 2023. Accompanied by an impressive ensemble of 40 orchestra members, Bonamassa delivered a performance that will now be forever encapsulated in this eagerly awaited release.

Live At The Hollywood Bowl With Orchestra showcases Bonamassa’s virtuosic blend of blues and rock but also elevates fan-favourite tracks with grandiose orchestral arrangements by some of Hollywood's finest – David Campbell, Trevor Rabin, and Jeff Bova.

“Very few gigs represent my journey in music more than the Hollywood Bowl. I moved to Los Angeles in 2003 in search of opportunity and cheaper rent than New York City.  My first gig at The Mint was attended by 5 of my friends and that's all. We have played The Greek Theatre many times since, but the Bowl has always been a dream. The orchestra and the sheer scale of the event and venue is something I will never forget. I am so grateful that we filmed this special event in my life,” reminisces Bonamassa.

The project’s lead single is a riveting live rendition of Bobby “Blue” Bland’s classic “Twenty-Four Hour Blues” from Bonamassa’s latest studio album Blues Deluxe Volume 2. Listen to the new live single HERE.

"With a master practitioner like Joe Bonamassa on guitar, studio ingredients become magic live,” comments Kevin Shirley, the project's producer. “Embracing the challenge of surpassing previous concerts, we aimed high for the Hollywood Bowl, incorporating orchestral maestros like David Campbell and Trevor Rabin. The result is a cinematic celebration of Joe’s music, a testament to his unparalleled standing in the blues-rock realm."

Bonamassa's Hollywood Bowl performance was a “bucket list” event that further cements his status as a leading figure in modern blues-rock. The collaboration with a full orchestra, under the guidance of renowned Hollywood orchestrators, added an unprecedented depth and scale to Joe’s music, providing fans with an entirely new way to experience his catalog. The project represents yet another pinnacle in Bonamassa’s career, encapsulating the magic of a live performance where every note resonates with the energy of a musician at the peak of his powers.

Following the momentum from his U.S. Spring Tour and recent Blues Music Award nominations, Bonamassa recently announced the "Blues Deluxe Tour" for the summer. Beginning August 2nd in Selbyville, DE, and culminating in an unforgettable two-night performance in Hampton Beach, NH, on August 30th and 31st, the tour celebrates Bonamassa's seminal albums Blues Deluxe and its chart-topping successor, Blues Deluxe Volume 2. This 21-city tour is set to showcase an electrifying mix of Bonamassa's classics and deep tracks live for the first time, alongside a band of world-class musicians. The news also follows the announcement of KEEPING THE BLUES ALIVE AT SEA X, the 10th voyage of Bonamassa’s annual cruise. For more information, visit www.jbonamassa.com.

Bonamassa's impact on the blues-rock genre is immeasurable. Guitar World has hailed him as "the world's biggest blues guitarist," a testament to his skill, influence, and role in bringing blues-rock to the forefront of the music scene. With a career spanning over three decades, Bonamassa has consistently captivated audiences around the globe with his dynamic live performances and musical ingenuity.

Incoming! Leave's Eyes

LEAVES’ EYES Premiere Epic Video For New Single
 "In Eternity"!
New Album, "Myths Of Fate", Coming This March On AFM Records

March 22, 2024  will see symphonic metal vikings, LEAVES' EYES, release their much-awaited, new studio album "Myths Of Fate" via AFM Records. The album pre-sale is available at https://leaveseyes.bfan.link/Myths-of-Fate.

Today, the band is premiering an epic music video for their new single "In Eternity". In support of their upcoming record release, LEAVES' EYES are also gearing up for an extensive album release tour with special guests METALITE and CATALYST CRIME - kicking off in March, find all live shows listed below!

With “Myths Of Fate”, the band set sails for new winds that definitely blow from the harsh shallows of the symphonic metal genre. The fantastic world of legends from Norse and Eastern European mythology is the setting for monumental entertainment: LEAVES' EYES open up a world of magical places, spellbound weapons or supernatural creatures.

The band produced a total of five music videos with Mastersound Entertainment. Filmed on impressive locations in Iceland, Germany and Poland, they bring the myths captivatingly to the screen. Magic creatures, great battles and enchanting warrior queens come to life.

About their new single, "In Eternity", vocalist Elina comments:

"In Eternity is one of the most personal songs in Leaves' Eyes history, dedicated to Alex' late mother Heidi Krull. It's a tribute to our ancestors, a primal anthem to their lives and spirits. The song embodies the rawness of emotion which the video's striking visuals accompany. The vast landscapes of Iceland and a pagan ceremony filmed in Wolin / Poland bring the story of the song alive in a captivating way."

LEAVES’ EYES have always played in a league of their own. The international group has toured all populated continents, playing concerts in more than 50 countries, frequently reach top positions in the album charts and with every output they deliver a multimedia masterpiece when it comes to video clips and artwork.

In their multifaceted discography, LEAVES’ EYES naturally integrate various genres such as folk metal, Viking metal or symphonic metal into their unique sound creations. Legendary releases like “Vinland Saga” (2005) or “Njord” (2009) made them pioneers in their own league, a position they successfully confirmed with chart-breakers like “King Of Kings” (2015) or “Sign Of The Dragonhead” (2018). Their compositions are complex, though, always well balanced between heaviness and melodic atmosphere. Each of their mind-broadening lyrical concepts based on mediaeval mythology are thoroughly researched, offering their audience journeys to the past times of Vikings, myths and sagas.

Their live shows are spectacular events with breathtaking stage scenery, including a Viking ship or even the “Swords In Rock” monument from Norway. LEAVES’ EYES have been setting world history to music and undeniably, by doing so, have raced to the top of the symphonic metal tree.

Now, Alexander Krull once again exceeded his own standards in the producer’s chair. For the fine and complex compositions you will find on “Myths Of Fate”, he created an extraordinary and crystal-clear sound sphere with an undeniable live feeling. The band sounds raw and feisty, but still leaves space for affective atmospheres. The US soundtrack-multi-talent Jonah Weingarten contributes the impressive orchestral score that was created hand in hand with the metal arrangements. Moreover, Lea-Sophie Fischer (Eluveitie) on the fiddle and Thomas Roth’s play of the mediaeval Nyckelharpa add on mystical sounds to “Myths Of Fate”.

LEAVES’ EYES have created an entire universe of their own imagination that showcases their talent as storytellers and music perfectionists. No doubt, the band will leave an everlasting footprint in their own genre with this album. “Myths Of Fate” provides a dynamic soundtrack for a vivid escape into a magical world of mythology.

Incoming! Scarefield

Scarefield
A Quiet Country
Independent Self Release
9 February 2024

SCAREFIELD Releases Debut Album, A Quiet Country

An ode to 80's horror in Thrash/Power Metal form!

New Album, A QUIET COUNTRY, Out NOW!

SCAREFIELD, the electrifying, horror-infused force in the world of thrash metal, SIMONE MANULI and MARKUS KRISTOFFERSSON, invites you to enter the scarefields with their debut album, A QUIET COUNTRY. This album, in vinyl, cd, and streaming formats, contains 11 songs of pure melodic, speedy, thrash madness that is sure to leave listeners awestruck. The dreaded fields await!

"A Quiet Country brings to mind vast fields of corn, cabins in old forests and unlit dirt roads leading away from the light of civilization. We chose this title for its dual meaning. While it initially suggests calmness and tranquillity, it can hint at an underlying tension or mystery: beneath the peaceful exterior of a countryside setting, there could be hidden secrets or a darker side waiting to be revealed. This duality characterizes the music and the lyrics. It is like a collection of tales in a storybook where the apparent peace of the countryside masks something sinister beneath the surface, prompting exploration and uncovering mysteries within this ostensibly tranquil setting.

This, our debut album, is the result of a long process of hard work, and we are pleased to finally be able to share it with the world" - SCAREFIELD

Told through the energetic, heavy, and melodic songs throughout the album, A Quiet Country contains a wide variety of musical styles from thrash to speed/power metal.  It will remind you of many metal bands: Blind Guardian, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Pantera.

Accompanying the album release is a story driven music video of the track "CHILD OF THE CORN," a song full of rage and regret made to touch our deepest emotions. Here, the intimate character of the opening melody is suddenly broken by the fury of guitars and raging vocals that evoke the lacerating memories of a past that cannot be healed.

All songs are written and recorded by Manuli/Kristoffersson, produced and mixed by Simone Manuli and mastered by Ronnie Björnström.

About the songs:

ANCIENT EVIL is a song based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft adapted from the short story ‘The Call of Cthulhu’. The song functions simultaneously as an ode to the works by the late father of cosmic horror as well as an expression of the love we share for classic horror that permeates our music.

DEAD CENTER is heavy and trashy, simply massive. The topic explored in the song is one of ambiguity, the feeling of standing on a thin line between two choices that can never be made and the chaos within that manifests as a result. What at an outside glance may appear as madness may in fact just be an attempt at release from the mundane and perpetuality of the everyday.

ALTAR OF FEAR is a melodic song inspired by a real-life event in childhood. One summer during St Lawrence night we went to watch the shooting stars when we happened upon an abandoned house in the open countryside. Within this house we saw a group of cultists worshipping the Devil. At the time we were so afraid, we didn’t speak of it in a month after! The sentences in the chorus are borrowed from John Carpenter’s In the Mouth of Madness.

SPECTRE expands the already massive input of genres contained within the album. Groovy, low beat, and rhythm driven, this song tells the story of a person who has just died only to wake up a ghost doomed to haunt the house of a loved one. Love keeps him imprisoned in this world. And the loved one doesn’t know about his death yet, she is scary and feels something wrong.

CHILD OF THE CORN is a song of calm, regret, chaos, and the call of the fields around the rural areas. This song is the epitome of our project: the melody follows the regrets of the past and ends up colliding with the lacerating memories evoked by the furious speed of the music and the scratchy voice.

GOD OF TERROR is an analogous story based on Greek mythology and the story of Zeus and Cronos. A fast and epic song that contains much of the harsh vocals only sparsely used throughout the album.

PRIMITIVE SHADOWS is a fast, breathtaking song. It is inspired by the dramatic sequence of the founding of the Statue of Liberty from Planet of the Apes movie. To be candid, the current events are not particularly promising in the world, we imagined how it would be easy to lose civilisation, wealth, knowledge and falling in a new dark age where mankind is just like wild primitive human beings praying their idols and living in caves. The chorus is ironic and evokes the allegory of the cave by Pluto.

DREAM, the title really says it all! This song is describing a dream sequence with both lyrics and instruments designed to make the listeners imagine the scenery described. It is carefully composed to capture the strangeness and awesomeness that can only be found in our dreams.

SHIVER is a groovy song, there’s a bit of ‘Pantera’ and a bit of ‘Metallica in it. The lyrics fit perfectly the classic horror movies from the 80’s, a Nightmare on Elm Street in particular. This was also one of the first songs we worked on together, we didn’t even have the band name at that time. It was a good way to become familiar with our songwriting.

ALWAYS is a rock ballad. The acoustic guitars and the vocal lines bring the listener to an intimate atmosphere outlined by regretful tones where the present gets confused with the memories until the culmination moment and the explosion of the electric guitars. The words in the chorus play with regret in the brain of the main character who betrayed the oath of love.

GOODBYE is a fitting song to finish of the album. In this song we attempt to capture the feeling of being on the brink of death. The song is inspired by panic attacks which for some people can feel like they’re experiencing a heart attack or a stroke. Placing it at the end of the album was fitting as the last words spoken on the album rings out saying GOODBYE…
About SCAREFIELD:

SCAREFIELD is a speed/thrash metal band inspired by the horror genre, in particular by the colourful and bombastic 80’s horror movies. The music consists of many familiar themes of both speed and thrash metal with additional influences from more modern forms of metal music, such as melodic death metal, as well as classic heavy metal.

SIMONE MANULI, the founder of  SCAREFIELD reached out from the plains of northern Italy to the frigid north of the arctic circle in northern Sweden where he would come in to contact with vocalist MARKUS KRISTOFFERSSON. The music, produced by Simone, was co-written and co-composed by the two members, melding their unique styles and influences into an interesting new take on the classic metal styles incorporated.

Self-produced and -written, the music contains massive atmosphere, fast riffs, melodic strings and heavy drums. The vocals are a mix of clean melody and power as well as the harsher death metal style vocals of the modern day. The lyrics contain topics such as personal stories, interesting concepts and of course the aforementioned horror theme!

If there is one band that combines a classic approach with fresh ideas and an expansive joy of playing to honor their ancestors from the likes of early Exodus, Metallica, or Slayer, then it is the German heavy metal hellions, VULTURE. On their fourth album Sentinels, set for release on April 12th via Metal Blade Records, they prove once again that tradition and further development are not mutually exclusive, but on the contrary can lead to something extraordinary that leaves no headbanger untouched.

"In direct comparison to the last album, Dealin' Death, we've picked up the pace again noticeably," elaborates guitarist Stefan Castevet. “We're bolder and a bit wilder again. It was important to us to be catchy and to include choruses that stick. Of course, we've basically retained our style, but we've defined the framework of the songs more clearly."

In order to create such a monster as Sentinels, some changes were necessary. "It started with the songwriting, where we took more time than usual. We recorded a total of three demos with numerous songs, which we also produced to the best of our ability. This gave us the chance to let our songs sink in as relatively final versions so that we could then choose the best pieces and - at least in part - rework them again."

VULTURE again recorded with Marco Brinkmann in his Hellforge Studio where  there were also some innovations. "We had a clearly structured daily routine, a normal working day with set goals in which we could focus purely on recording the songs. Our previous recordings were a bit less organized which resulted in working overtime for everyone involved at the end. This is one of the reasons why Sentinels is the best sounding VULTURE record to date!"

In advance of the record‘s release, today the band unleashes first single, “Unhallowed & Forgotten,” which serves as a blueprint for the VULTURE style: wild riffs, lots of breaks, and tone changes, furious solos, exploding toms, and a huge chorus! "Lyrically, we also stay true to ourselves,” notes Castevet. “The song is about the Blind Dead film series, whose thirst for blood, like ours, is difficult to quench.”

In Profile: The Noble Front

Band Name: The Noble Front

Country: Ireland

Label: Unsigned

Let's start at the beginning then. When did the band form?

This is a new venture, with musicians who have known each other and played with each other for many years. We have played in thrash metal, grunge and rock bands together and this is all 100% original, new and raw. We’re excited to bring it to the scene.

Who's in the band?

We have just released our debut record and are in the process of finalising our line-up. We have some potential shows lined up and are excited to get the show on the road. The music needs a live experience, and we can’t wait to get going.

Were any of you in bands before?

We have played in bands together actually! I (Barry – Vox and guitar) played with Sean (bass) and Don (guitar) in a thrash metal band way back when..

How would YOU describe your sound?

Raw, hard-hitting, honest.

What are your musical influences?

Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Metal, Punk, Post-Punk bands. Anything that’s real and resonates.

What have been up to lately? any new stuff to delight our ears?

We released our debut record last month! Please check it out. The reviews and feedback has been amazing so far. We are excited and relieved to get it out there at last.

How about live dates? What have you been doing and what ya got planned for 2024?

The plan is to play shows, tour during the summer, grow and expand and enjoy what we are doing with our friends and fans and families. Hopefully more music later in the year also.

Name something about yourselves that fans won't know

Sean (bass) is the engineer that created the record for us. I’m a teacher and Don is an electrician. Let’s get this record and live show going so we can quit the day jobs!

What's the most embarrassing moment you've had?

Musically!? Jesus! Playing a show hammered in a pub in which the punters really weren’t in the mood to hear heavy music! Fell off the stage while trying to plug in a lead midway through the set. Met with a lot of applause.

Do you have any superstitions? Any things you do before a show?

Not a thing. Get the energy up, get out there and give the people and experience. They deserve it.

Are there any musicians or bands you'd love to work with?

Loads to be honest. The scene is healthy it seems. Fontaines DC, Idles, NewDad to name a few.

Any final thoughts?

Thanks for reading and for your time. Give the record a listen, we poured our hearts and souls into it. If anything, it’s an honest expression of who we are, as people.

Incoming! Big Wolf Band

Big Wolf Band announced the release of Living on Borrowed Time the second single taken from their forthcoming studio album Rebel’s Journey.

The new single is released Friday February 16th, and is available on all streaming platforms from https://ditto.fm/living-on-borrowed-time. Watch the official music video on YouTube HERE.

The highly anticipated new album, Rebel's Journey, released Friday April 19th and is now available to pre-order from www.bigwolfband.com/shop.

News of the new single follows Big Wolf Band’s nomination for UK Blues Band of the Year at the 2023 UK Blues Awards. Vote for Big Wolf Band at www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/KID7IP/

Hailed by music pundits as most highly anticipated album collection of songs of their career, Rebel’s Journey is the second instalment of the Rebel’s trilogy of albums. Joining forces once more with esteemed producer Mark Stuart and studio engineer maestro Sheena Sear at M2 Studios for their third studio album.

"Living on Borrowed Time" has real rocking feel to it, but again, the Big Wolf Band manages to keep the links to the blues to create their own unique sound, fours to the floor. Powerful lyrics depicting a hidden battle.

“This song is about battling depression and how sometimes you feel like you are living on borrowed time,” says Big Wolf Band’s guitarist and lead singer, Jonathan Earp. “I have felt in the past that I am looking over my shoulder, what happens if the next episode is the last and the black dog finally gets me. This really does tell that battle I have with those negative thoughts.”

The running time of Living on Time Borrowed is 3:45. The IRSC code is UKJRC2400015.

The new album is about the growth of the band and frontman’s Jonathan Earp’s personal journey. Big Wolf Band have built a reputation as being one of the best live bands on the circuit, delivering dynamic shows with an expansive range of self-penned songs that cover all flavours of blues rock that truly makes them unique. Rebel’s Journey reinforces this bands creativity, musicianship, and delivery. Each song having its own identity but still that unmistakable Big Wolf sound. The band’s ability to drift between genres while keeping their own sound is a big selling point amongst followers of the band.

The first single off the album and racing out of the blocks is Empire and a Prayer. This is a high energy, pedal to metal riff-based guitar track. It hits you with flavours of southern rock, Americana and hints of the blues, laced with catchy vocal hooks, driving piano and powerful drums.

The song is about escapism, getting away from it all and in this case taking a drive in your favourite car to forget your daily worries. The track is also a little nod to a friend who has provided help to the band in the past. The backing vocals on this track and on the rest of the album is the wonderful Zoe Green. This song demonstrates the band’s ability to move through the gears with ease and ultimately demonstrates a more rocking sound. This track was co-written by Jonathan Earp and Justin Johnson.

“Rebel’s Journey highlights my own personal battle with my mental and physical health,” says vocalist and guitarist Jonathan Earp. “I have a connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (HEDS) which affects everything. I had surgery in mid-2019 during our “Be Free” tour to repair damage to my right shoulder, dislocations, and nerve pain. Unfortunately, the operation caused more pain and numbness and for nearly 2 years I struggled to play; some days to even hold a plectrum."

"Songs like Standing in the Rain, Black Dog Blues and Living on Borrowed Time are about the battles I had during those dark days. My condition will always be a challenge but one I live with and continue to prove doubters wrong.”

Continues Jonathan, “the album isn’t all doom and gloom, despite being in the blues genre. “Empire and a Prayer, my first co-written song with Justin Johnson, as well as Got Me Reeling and Living on Borrowed Time. We have had many a joke with my dark writing style, Justin brings the light and love. Rise Together is one of the songs on the album I am proud of and is all about the power of love, rising together and that anything is possible.”

Mick, Justin, Robin, and Tim played out of their skin. Mark and Sheena as always bringing it all together. Big Shout out to Zoe Green for adding some amazing backing vocals. We even managed a first in the studio's history by getting Sheena to add some gang vocals along with my wife on Rise Together.” As the title of the album suggests, it has been one hell of a journey”. “The most challenging song on the album was Standing in the Rain. It’s a big old ballad of a song, lots of moving parts, orchestral parts, stops, starts and even a thunderstorm. Everyone delivered big time on this album.

2024 also sees Big Wolf Band hit a big milestone reaching their 10th year together as a band. From humble beginning as a 3-piece to the big sound they deliver now as a 5-piece. “Rebel’s Journey” is a fitting name for the album and their 10th year together. The band undertake their biggest headline tour to date adding dates in Germany and the Czech Republic.

Album Track By Track

Empire and a Prayer - This track is the first collaboration between me and Justin,” says Jonathan. “I had all the music and Justin added the lyrics. The song is all about getting in car and going for a drive to clear your head, certainly helps if it’s a nice car! The title is a nod to a friend Mark who helped us out by driving us to a lot of gigs.”

Valley of the Fallen Kings - “This track has it all and gives a different twist to the story of the crossroads and making a deal with the devil,” says Jonathan. “The production on this has a bit of everything on it, 12 and 6 string acoustic guitars and Mark and Sheena really deliver on putting it all together. It is a big old song and one that is fun to play live.”

Lay it on the Line - “This track has the traditional Big Wolf feel, if that’s a thing” says Jonathan. “A blues drenched number with a variation on the typical blues turn arounds. The track has some lovely dynamics in it, drop down section that builds nicely into a solid blues solo. I really dig into some simplistic but powerful bluesy guitar vibes. My guitar influences seeping through my playing. Robin adding a funky style piano, Zoe with those stunning backing vocals really added to the whole vibe.

Rise Together - As in previous albums, the band isn’t afraid to flex its songwriting muscles and produce an anthem style song in “Rise Together”, this song has southern, country and roots vibes to it with some amazing vocals and harmonies. Jonathan says “This song was the most I have ever been pushed vocally by Mark. Lots of praise to Mark for his input on this track. A very subtle change in the melody and the song came alive. I love the vocal arrangements on this track, Mark and Sheena are such an essential part to the Big Wolf sound. Zoe shines on this track with her harmonies, a massive team effort overall. I wrote this song about my amazing son and my brilliant soon to be daughter -in-law and, how they have grown in their relationship, love has such power. If you stand together anything is possible.”

Six Strings Loaded - A throwback bluesy rock filled adventure. Lyrically this song is about making a deal with the devil to get his soul back. This song has an old school rock feel about it while keeping a blues feel. Zoe’s gospel style backing vocals adds another flavour and Mick Jeynes bass line is killer on this track. Mick adds “Jon had a swampy Andy Fraser type bass line already prepared for this track and so it was a pleasure to try and work on his ideas. Jon gave me free reign to experiment a bit in the bridge and so it was great to throw in the odd minor pentatonic fill in for that part.”

Black Dog Blues - Classic Big Wolf Band vibes all over this track, powerful, dynamic, and moody. Jonathan says, “It’s about battling those dark thoughts, depression creeping in and how sometimes no matter how hard you try it still gets you. From a song point of view this was great song to record, and the backbone of the track is provided by that solid unit of Mick and Tim. Robin adds some stunning Hammond runs on this song as well that really gives it that feel.”

Standing in the Rain - “This is probably the biggest sounding song we have ever recorded,” says Jonathan. “This track was a mammoth undertaking and at the early stages of song selection nearly didn’t make the cut. I had the guitar line and some other bits but was struggling pulling it all together. After a bit of perseverance, it came together. I am not afraid to say I have my struggles with mental health and this song is about being lost in a deep depression, seeing how much you are loved but feeling totally detached from it. I am super proud of this song and everyone’s contribution on it.”

Living on Borrowed Time - This track has real rocking feel to it but again the Big Wolf Band manages to keep the links to the blues to create their own unique sound, fours to the floor. Powerful lyrics depicting a hidden battle. Jonathan describes “Another song about battling depression and how sometimes you feel like you are living on borrowed time. I have felt in the past that I am looking over my shoulder, what happens if the next episode is the last and the black dog finally gets me. This really does tell that battle I have with those negative thoughts.”

Got Me Reeling - Catchy blues drenched feel to this. Mick and Tim really at the forefront on this song, providing an amazing groove for the rest of the band to bounce off. Catchy vocal melodies, hook lines and solo that build nicely. The third song co-written by Jonathan and Justin.

Crazy Love - Funky up-tempo bluesy groove on this song. High energy, dynamic and catchy. Jonathan adds “This one if from the locker. I think I originally wrote this way back in 2012 but kept it on ice. Sometimes you just wait for the right time to bring a song into existence, Justin was very eager to get this one on the album. This was a lot of fun to record and remember.”

Darker Side of You - This is a dark and moody number about when love falls apart. This song has a catchy guitar hook and some soulful backing vocals provided by Zoe. Again, this has that Big Wolf sound, the production on this is perfectly simplistic. Jonathan adds “I sometimes like to write about a subject matter or a scenario rather than my own life. This song tells the story about one person coming to terms that they are in a bad relationship, trying to hold it all together but it is a toxic relationship. Robin adds some nice piano on this track. Simplistically beautiful”

Just a Little Bit - Groovy number with some nice flavours of the blues, fun, energetic song with some nice backing vocals and a dirty bassline. Jon says “This is an upbeat little number that just grooves along nicely. Telling a story of holding in there and having that one person that makes it all ok.”

Too Many Times - This is song is dynamic, powerful, subtle with a strong message given the times we live in. It is a fitting way to finish the album with some sobering thoughts. Jonathan adds his thoughts “We really have learned nothing, we still crave war, civilization hasn’t evolved yet has it? The powers that be are always seeking out the next war for profit and greed, leaving a world divided by hatred. I hope one day we find a way to live together in peace, after all we are living a tiny planet hurtling through the galaxy.”
