In Profile: Solnedgang

Band Name: Solnedgang
Country: UK/Norway
Label: Independent

1. Let's start at the beginning then. When did the band form?

I started this project at the end of 2022, after not really having been creating any music for a while. I wanted to get back into it, so I bought a new guitar, set up a Bandcamp page and just started playing and writing again.

2. Who's in the band?

Just me – Jon. I play mainly guitar, but also drum programming, keyboards and whatever else I think the music needs.

3. Were any of you in bands before?

Just one, ages ago. It never really went anywhere – we played one gig. After that I was just writing some solo stuff, which didn’t really go anywhere either until I started this project.

4. How would YOU describe your sound?

I’d say it’s atmospheric, melodic instrumental music in the post-rock/metal realm.

5. What are your musical influences?

So, so many, but the main ones are Mono, Explosions in the Sky, The Ocean, Cult of Luna, Isis, The Cure and Pink Floyd.

6. What have been up to lately? any new stuff to delight our ears?

Yes indeed! I’ve just released my debut EP called Valkyrie – out now on Bandcamp and all major streaming platforms.

7. How about live dates? What have you been doing and what ya got planned for 2024?

Unfortunately not. I don’t have any plans to play live at all.

8. Name something about yourselves that fans won't know

I can’t think of anything juicy, but my day job is as a graphic designer.

9. What's the most embarrassing moment you've had?

In my previous band we were playing our one and only gig, and we had about an 8 hour train journey to get there. Our plan was to have some drums as a backing track for the final part of our one (very long) song, and to put the final touches on that while on the train. So we exported everything before we left and when we loaded up the drum track we found we only had the midi track and the software we were using for some reason only had one weird synth preset. So we ended up with these stabbing synth sounds instead of drums, but we didn’t tell anyone so I think people assumed it was intentional!

10. Do you have any superstitions? Any things you do before a show?

Not really. I’d probably take up meditation to calm myself down if I were to play live again.

11. Are there any musicians or bands you'd love to work with?

There are loads that would be interesting to work with, but the most obvious one for me would be Robert Smith.

12. Any final thoughts?

Nothing other than to check out my new EP, and please follow me on social media. An album is coming later in the year!
